Here's what's interesting to me about this piece (besides that I did it and it was fun). I've been teaching private students this summer and have been drawing along with them. I've been digging up photos - matters little what it is - and drawing it. Then re-drawing it without the reference, then redrawing it using only the previous drawing, and on and on until something happens. This is what happened here - a couple of boy emerged, up to no-good, defending the world against evil. Oh wait, maybe they are evil. Doesn't matter. But there is a story here sure enough and my wings are feeling wider.

Hi Karen,
I like this process. I use it at times too. Mostly my latest work has concentrated on African animals, so I use the references first, then redraw and then find the 'character' emerging for the next redraw.
I haven't tried the process with children as much, but you have sparked an interest here. Your drawing is captivating and stirs the imagination. This is just SO good! Makes me want a book with these two as the main characters in a marvelous little caper.
What a great idea! I love the end result! I love your work and have added you to my favorite links list on my own blog!
I can see it now... you have a pair of enemies... see how the taller boy is just the littlest bit leery of the vial in the science nerds hand? The shorter boy is actually threatening the taller/older one or offering to split the spoils- if he keeps out of the way!! Oh, my what a devilish summer mischief is abound due to these two.
You draw such intense images. I could almost imagine the dialog.
Keep it up!
Much Love, Sirah
It looks like we've got a brainiac and a cool, popular guy hanging out together like best buds. Hmmm... indeed, something is shook up about the world these kids are living in (and wonderfully so) and when than kind of thing happens its true: they MUST be up to no good. Look out world. There IS a story here! Great artwork, Karen!
Oh wow - look at all the typos in my post. Ack! : ) - Janelle
